The Grundfos range of horizontal submersible SMD mixers is designed for applications involving mixing, that is the homogenisation and suspension, of low to medium-viscosity liquids. The SMD mixers are made entirely of stainless steel. The energy-efficient propeller is directly driven by the motor. The squirrel-cage induction motor is protected against overload by means of three bi-metallic thermal switches (PTO) in the motor windings. Optionally three thermistors (PTC sensors) are available. The products are equipped with IE3 motor components.

To prevent ingress of the surrounding liquid, the SMD mixers have a pre-sealing system consisting of lip seals against a wear ring and as main sealing a double mechanical shaft seal cartridge consisting of two mechanical seals. The outer seal is made of silicon carbide/silicon carbide and the inner sealing is carbon ceramic.

For mixers smaller than 1.8 kW, an optional moisture switch can be built in, and for mixers at 1.9 kW and higher, the moisture switch is standard. In case of increased humidity, the switch can be used to give an alarm.

For mixers at 1.9 kW and higher, the oil-filled seal housing can be monitored for the ingress of water by an optional leak sensor incorporated in the seal housing. The sensor can trigger an alarm signal and/or switch off the motor by means of an external Grundfos relay, type ALR-20/A.

The stainless-steel shaft rests on two lubricated-for-life ball bearings.

Motors range from 0.9 to 3.5 kW.
